A Flag We Can All Be Proud Of

Are you so used to seeing the Green Flag flying above the lawn near the main gate of West Ham Park that you hardly notice it? If so, that is a real shame. This flag, awarded annually, is an international symbol of quality for publicly accessible green spaces and parks. Every park which joins the award scheme is judged on a range of categories, and must score highly on all of them to gain, and keep its flag. These categories include: being welcoming and accessible to all; helping people to feel safe and secure; high standards of environmental management and maintenance; working to increase biodiversity and protect the environment. It is also important for the park to be involved with the local community, which is where the Friends of West Ham Park come in, with our community events like the recent ParkFest 26, the ever popular Newham’s Biggest Leaf Pile, and our Bat and Birdwatching and Stargazing sessions.
West Ham Park gained its first Green Flag in 2001 and has proudly maintained the high standards needed to keep the flag ever since.
This is a great credit to the Park Managers and to the Park Rangers, who you will all know as they move around the park in the little buggies or on foot. It is the presence of these Rangers that many of you have told us is the reason that you choose to visit this park and feel safe there.
So three cheers for our beautiful park and its great staff. Lets keep the Green Flag flying!
