The plan was for everyone to make their own 5-a-Day Crown as a reminder to eat more fruit and vegetables, although in reality only children took part! Heads were first measured up for the crown – you don’t want your crown the wrong size do you? Then you got to select five fruit or vegetable paper shapes (from an extensive selection) which were then coloured with paint or felt tips. Finally the whole lot was assembled into a very colourful crown that the King would’ve been proud to wear.
Meanwhile mums and dads got a tour of the Community Vegetable Garden – which is starting to come to life again after the long winter. Almost 150 people turned up so we were a bit rushed off our feet! The whole event was funded with a generous grant from Newham Council’s King’s Coronation Grant.
The Community Vegetable Garden in West Ham Park is open from 10am-12pm on Tuesdays, and 2-4pm on Wednesdays. We are always looking for new volunteers to help with planting, weeding, some digging and other jobs in the garden. We also have groups of young people over, so if anyone has experience of teaching groups in the open air, we would welcome that too. Come and join us!
