Press Release.
West Ham Park is a 77 acre green oasis in East London, hugely valued by the community it serves, but now the City of London wants to build houses on part of the former plant nursery. The City of London calls this a Brownfield Site; it is not designated as such. It is part of West Ham Park.
The City of London claims that West Ham Park needs to create an additional income stream. This does not seem to be required of other open spaces owned by the City.
This area could be used instead to enlarge the public area of the park. The Friends of West Ham Park, who help the local communities gain the most from this fabulous open space in such a densely crowded area, are appalled at this proposal. Roger Jones, the Chair of the Friends Group said ‘Everyone I have spoken to is outraged by this proposal. The park has been a lifeline for so many people both before and during the COVID pandemic. The park has always been extremely popular and very well used. During the pandemic the number of people using the park has doubled. We desperately need more, not less, space. We will be fighting against this insult to the communities around the park in every way we can’.
